Last-minute lake day? You can make it happen today!

1. Pick Your Lake

You don’t need to spend an hour researching where to go.

To make this easy, we’ve created Google Maps saved lists with some of the best lake spots in the area — so you can just open, choose, and go.

Popular options include:

  • Scotts Flat Lake – closest and easiest access

  • Rollins Lake – great for a relaxed, calm day

  • Englebright Reservoir – more scenic and tucked away

  • New Bullards Bar Reservoir – bigger water, more of an adventure

Tip: Save your favorite list on your phone so you can pull it up anytime you're feeling spontaneous.

2. Skip the Gear Stress (This Is Where Inflatable Wins)

This is where most people get stuck.

Traditional kayaks and paddleboards require:

  • Roof racks

  • Tie-downs

  • Storage space

  • Extra time

That’s exactly why we use inflatable kayaks and paddleboards.

They pack down into a bag, fit in your car, and are quick to set up at the lake, no special equipment needed.

It’s the difference between:
“I’ll plan this later” and “Let’s go today.”

3. Grab the Essentials (Keep It Simple)

You don’t need a full checklist to make this work.

Stick to the basics:

  • Water

  • Snacks

  • Sunscreen

  • Towels

  • Swimsuit

Optional (but worth it):

  • A small cooler

  • A picnic blanket

  • A dry bag for your phone/keys

The goal is not perfection, it’s getting out the door quickly.

4. Choose the Right Time of Day

If you're going last-minute, timing matters.

Best windows:

  • Morning: calmer water, fewer people

  • Late afternoon / early evening: great light, more relaxed vibe

Midday can still work, just expect a bit more wind and activity.

5. Set Up + Get on the Water

Once you arrive:

  • Inflate your board or kayak (quick and straightforward)

  • Pick a calm entry point

  • Start slow, especially if it’s your first time

Inflatable boards are stable and beginner-friendly, which makes them perfect for spontaneous outings.

6. Keep the Day Flexible

This isn’t a structured itinerary.

Paddle for a bit. Float. Take a break. Eat snacks. Go back out.

That’s the whole point, is to chill.

Nevada County lakes are perfect for low-pressure days where you can just enjoy being outside.

You don’t need a full plan to have a great day outside.

Sometimes all it takes is a few hours, a good lake, and the decision to get outdoors!
