The Perfect Fourth of July in Nevada County: Paddle, Explore, and Celebrate Like a Local
If you're spending Fourth of July weekend in Nevada County, you're in for one of the best small-town Independence Day celebrations you'll find anywhere in California.
Between the historic parade in Nevada City, family-friendly festivities in Grass Valley, local fireworks, and beautiful lakes just minutes away, it's entirely possible to fit a full outdoor adventure into a single day.
Here's how we'd spend the perfect Fourth of July in Nevada County.
Start Your Morning on the Water
Before the crowds arrive and the temperatures climb, head to one of our local lakes for a peaceful morning paddle.
Early mornings offer:
Calmer water
Cooler temperatures
Fewer boats
Better wildlife viewing
Easier parking
Whether you choose Scotts Flat Lake, Rollins Lake, Englebright Reservoir, or Bullards Bar, a morning paddle is one of the best ways to start the holiday.
Our inflatable kayaks and paddleboards make it easy to get on the water without needing roof racks or special equipment. Simply load up, head out, and enjoy a few hours on the lake before the day's festivities begin.
Head Into Nevada City for the Parade
After your paddle, make your way to downtown Nevada City for one of Nevada County's most beloved traditions.
The annual Fourth of July Parade begins at 11:00 AM and winds through the historic streets of downtown Nevada City. Nevada City and Grass Valley alternate hosting duties each year, and 2026's celebration returns to Nevada City.
Expect:
Creative floats
Local organizations
Live music
Community spirit
Plenty of red, white, and blue
If you've never experienced a Nevada County Fourth of July parade, it's worth arriving early to find a good viewing spot.
Grab Lunch and Explore Downtown
Once the parade wraps up, spend some time exploring Nevada City's historic downtown.
A few ideas:
Grab lunch at a local restaurant
Browse boutiques and galleries
Enjoy a cold drink on a patio
Wander the historic streets
One of the best things about Nevada County is that nothing feels rushed. You can easily spend a few hours exploring before heading to the evening festivities.
Choose Your Afternoon Adventure
Depending on your energy level, you have a few options.
Option 1: Head Back to the Lake
Many locals split their day between the parade and another afternoon paddle or swim.
Since you've already done the setup earlier in the day, it's easy to squeeze in another hour or two on the water before dinner.
Option 2: Relax and Recharge
Holiday weekends are busy. Sometimes the best move is to take a break, enjoy some shade, and save your energy for the evening celebration.
Evening Festivities in Grass Valley
As the sun begins to set, head over to downtown Grass Valley for the evening celebration.
The 2026 festivities include live entertainment, food, community activities, and the Star-Spangled Bash on the Plaza beginning in the evening before fireworks later that night.
It's a great opportunity to enjoy the community atmosphere and celebrate with friends, family, and visitors from across the region.
End the Day with Fireworks
The evening concludes with one of the area's most anticipated Fourth of July traditions: fireworks around 9:30 PM. The free show is at the interchange of Dorsey Drive, and can be easily viewed from many of the nearby parking areas.
A quick reminder for visitors: personal fireworks remain illegal throughout Nevada County due to wildfire risk, making the official community celebrations the safest and best way to enjoy the holiday.

A Fourth of July to Remember
One of the things we love most about Nevada County is that you don't have to choose between outdoor adventure and community events.
You can spend the morning paddling across a quiet lake, the afternoon exploring historic downtown Nevada City, and the evening celebrating with friends and neighbors under the fireworks.
That's a pretty great way to spend the Fourth of July.
